*The Irish Art of Cosmic Surrender. A Profane Theology of Letting Go.*

Not fuck you. Not fuck off. Not even fuck that.

Just, ah, sure, fuck it.

Three little words. Four if you count the ah. An entire spiritual teaching, delivered without ceremony, incense, or the slightest pretence of enlightenment.

Enter Aidan.

My reluctant shaman guru. Not a saffron-robed sage descending from some Himalayan monastery with the accumulated wisdom of ten thousand years. No. Aidan. In a fucking housing estate in Drogheda.

Where, amid the wheelie bins, parked cars and the ordinary absurdity of Irish suburban life, the universe apparently decided to dispense one of its more useful spiritual teachings.

No initiation. No sacred transmission. No fucking gong.

Just Aidan.

Ah, sure, fuck it.

Beautiful.

We have so little control here. So fucking little.

Each one of us, and the place itself, constituted by forces so far beyond our comprehension that our insistence on being in charge is, when you think about it, absolutely hilarious.

Life is happening. Death is happening. They are not opposites so much as essential components of the same astonishing business. Everything coming into being is already passing away. Everything we love, everything we fear, everything we build, defend, accumulate, and cling to is participating in that same movement.

And here we are, trying to get a fucking grip on it.

Trying to exert power over the world. Over each other. Over ourselves.

Some of that is virtuous. We have agency. We can cultivate things. Make things. Repair things. We can intervene where intervention is necessary. We can exercise discipline, take responsibility, and attempt to leave the place in better condition than we found it.

But some of it is absolute folly.

Particularly our insistence that other people should see things as we see them.

Someone pisses you off. They misunderstand you. Misrepresent you. Say something so spectacularly wrong that your entire nervous system mobilises for war.

You are going to correct this.

You are going to explain, in forensic detail, exactly where they have gone wrong. You are going to dismantle their argument, expose their ignorance, demonstrate the impeccable logic of your position, and, if necessary, call them a motherfucker.

Fuck you!

Fuck you, you motherfucker!

And then what?

Have you liberated yourself? Have you altered the fundamental constitution of another human being? Have you wrestled the universe into some more agreeable arrangement?

Or have you just become another angry bollocks shouting at another angry bollocks?

Ah, sure, fuck it.

Not as resignation. Not as indifference. Certainly not as an excuse to abandon responsibility or tolerate cruelty.

As liberation.

The deliberate relinquishment of a demand that reality arrange itself according to your preferences.

You can disagree without needing to prevail. You can be misunderstood without spending the rest of your natural life correcting the misunderstanding. You can allow another person to be completely, gloriously, catastrophically wrong.

You might even be wrong yourself.

Imagine that.

There is something profoundly comic about the human animal. A temporary arrangement of matter, animated by a mysterious force, standing on a spinning rock in an incomprehensibly vast universe, absolutely fucking furious because somebody has failed to appreciate his point of view.

I know this animal intimately.

I have been this animal.

I am frequently still this animal.

And I am slowly discovering that there is another possibility.

Ah, sure, fuck it.

There is no great metaphysical machinery required. No elaborate programme of personal transformation. No expensive retreat. No need to become a better version of yourself before you're allowed to experience a little peace.

Just the occasional recognition that you do not have to interfere with everything.

Not every accusation requires a defence. Not every insult requires retaliation. Not every misunderstanding requires correction. Not every uncomfortable feeling requires an explanation, an excavation, or a fucking committee meeting.

Some things can simply be left alone.

And here is the peculiar thing. The moment you stop insisting that the world be otherwise, you become available to it as it is.

Not necessarily happier. Not necessarily calmer. Certainly not permanently enlightened.

Just a little less occupied with the exhausting business of being God.

There are things worth fighting for. People worth defending. Wrongs worth righting. None of this is an excuse to duck those things.

But I am not the fucking manager of existence.

I don't even know what's going on in my own head half the time, and yet here I am trying to supervise yours.

The sheer fucking arrogance of it.

Ah, sure, fuck it.
